The painting of the Mona Lisa has aways been admired, not only for its beauty but also because of the mystery that surrounds the painting, the painter (Leonardo DaVinci) and the subject herself - the forever beautiful, Mona Lisa. Originally painted in the 16th century, this phenomenally popular painting has been reproduced in various ways. The original painting hangs in the Musee du Louvre museum in Paris and it is proudly owned by the French government.
Believe it or not, the Mona Lisa was given that name 31 years after the death of Leonardo da Vinci by Giorgio Vasari. The woman in the photo was identified (by Vasari) as Lisa Gherardini, the lovely wife of a wealthy business man. Madonna, which mean my lady was a normal addition to a woman's name, used the way Madam is used in English. Madonna Lisa, Madam Lisa. Mona is a shortened version of Madonna, sometimes spelled Monna.
A lot of people ask "what is unfinished about the mona Lisa". but it took Leonardo almost four years to complete the painting that became the most popular in the world and some argue that earlier copies show columns on each side of Mona Lisa and they claim that they were cut from the canvas after da Vinci died. Others argue, otherwise.
How the Mona Lisa Was Stolen - On august 21, 1911, this painting was stolen from the Louvreand one of the suspected culprits was - none other than - Pablo Picasso. He was later found to be completely innocent. It turned out, that an employee named Vincenzo Peruggiastole stole - the already famous painting - by hiding in a broom closet and simply walking out (with the painting hidden under his coat) after the museum had closed for business that day.
