A Brief History of Russian Nesting Dolls

Russian wood nesting dolls are also called stacking dolls were first crafted in the very early 1890's. The original Russian name is матрёшка, which is matryoshka in American English. The style of the Russian nesting doll is said to be a direct inspiration of souvenir dolls brought from Japan around that time. But, the wood carvings from an earlier time clearly resembles the design that is present in the nesting dolls. As a matter of fact, the first Faberge egg -- in 1885 -- had a yolk, an egg and a hen nesting inside, and it had a crown.

The Russian nesting dolls did not become popular until around 1900, when Mrs. Mamontova - who was the wife of the maker of the first nesting doll, made in 1890 - decided to show the dolls at the World Exhibition, in Paris, and the doll(s) won a bronze medal.

That began the adoration of the beautiful and unique Russian nesting doll, that continues to this day.
